I must confess I was ignorant of who this gentleman was, and intended to go to this show for the talented Jesse Boykins III. But I looked him up and, thus far, I like what I hear :)

For an idea of what you'd be getting into, click here. See you guys there.
(My hand was shaky as I took the photo due to my excitement, so excuse me if the image is a bit blurry.)

Last night marked the official launch of frndofthepeople. After running into Lupe Fiasco at the Dialogue between Cornel West and Carl Dix in City College, we asked him for his blessing to launch this blog to promote the revolution of conscious thought (in other words, don’t sue us Lu). He was gracious enough to grant our request, and the sky’s the limit from here.

Much thanks to Dr. West and Mr. Dix for imparting their knowledge and experience with the audience. Very inspiring dialogue that went down. Big shout out to Gbenga Akinnagbe, who played Chris Partlow in HBO’s “The Wire”, and came to support, show love, and ask very thought provoking questions to these estimable gentleman. And of course, to Mr. Lupe Fiasco, thank you.

With that being said, let’s get to work.

The Masses versus The People

In this world, society is split into two groups. There is one group, which follows a culture that is controlled by materialistic perception and standards that the media creates to have us believe are rules. Those that fit this description, those that allow themselves to be led and don’t strive to reach a higher level both mentally and spiritually; we call this group the masses. Like sheep in a field they move from day to day being told what to do, and make no effort to stand up, be unique, and separate from the norm.

The second group follows a culture of their own individual creation. They question society, shun the propaganda that we are expected to follow, and pride themselves in forging their own path. They are our entrepreneurs, our conscious thinkers, our gifted artists, our role models. Those that fit this description are called the people.

Hip-Hop is one of the most influential cultures humanity has every witnessed. Through music, artists have been able to make us smile, cry, laugh, make us angry, help us think, help us live. This blog is dedicated to the people. This blog is dedicated to those who take Hip-Hop as seriously as we do. This blog is dedicated to real music. This blog is dedicated to those who swim against the current of the mainstream, in search of  knowledge and truth. If you turn on the television and see nonsense masquerading as Hip-Hop, or feel unfulfilled when you hear music that the masses think is hot, then you are one of us. You are one of the people. We are your friend. And we welcome you.

Sincerely,

frndofthepeople
